A MESSAGE FROM DOUG

Dear QUACers,

On the heels of an amazing Ski and Swim Event, it is time to announce my resignation as Team Captain and as Coach. Many of you had heard that I was planning to step down as Team Captain. I assumed the role of Team Captain in 2003, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. The timing for my departure is ideal, because the team has never had so much enthusiasm and such a large volunteer base. I am confident to QUAC’s future success.

I am taking on some other projects which demand my undivided attention. I hope to continue to swim and to play waterpolo.

My official last day as Team Captain will be March 1, 2007. In the next week or so I will provide the QUAC board with the team records, and provide any assistance they may need. Watch your e-mail for future announcements.

Most of you know how much this team has meant to me. I hope as the team moves forward, the team continues to focus on swimming, waterpolo, diving and synchronized swimming, the team continues to strive for diversity and inclusion, and the team remains a warm and friendly environment for everyone.

Thank you,
Love Doug

Swimming crosscurrent, club battles stereotypes

By the fifth grade, Scott Weaver knew he was gay. His classmates seemed to sense it, too; they shunned him on the playground and in gym class, where homosexuality has historically been seen as a sign of weakness.

But on Saturday, there was Weaver, 52, churning through the water during a swim meet at Salt Lake City’s Fairmont Aquatic Center, competing against guys half his age.

The occasion was the Queer Utah Aquatic Club’s “Ski & Swim” weekend, which attracts 180 athletes from around the country for social and competitive events in skiing, swimming, ice skating and water polo.

“Gay people aren’t supposed to be able to do sports,” said the Salt Lake City man with a wry smile. “It’s one of the misperceptions people have about us.”

The Queer Utah Aquatic Club (QUAC) has been battling misperceptions since Salt Lake City attorney Doug Fadel founded the group in 1995. That year, Fadel was the only Utah swimmer at the International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics championships in Montreal.

Now the club has more than 125 active members, and QUAC athletes routinely win medals at national and international meets such as the Gay Games.

Saturday’s meet, which drew swimmers from as far away as New York, Florida and Ontario, Canada, was certainly competitive. Swimmers knifed through the water with smooth, practiced strokes, and many races were close.

Out of the pool, however, the event seemed more about having fun. ABBA blasted from a poolside stereo, the Salt Lake Men’s Choir sang the national anthem and four members of Utah Cyber Sluts, a drag-queen comedy group, cheered from the sidelines in 1930s-style swimwear, outrageous makeup and beehive wigs.

QUAC members say they compete for enjoyment and exercise, not to combat stereotypes. But as gay athletes, some were heartened when former NBA player and Utah Jazz center John Amaechi made headlines earlier this month by becoming the first pro basketball player to declare his homosexuality.

“It’s been a very positive thing to have [that] dialogue,” said QUAC team captain Fadel, who swam for his high school team in Bountiful before he came out of the closet. “Positive or negative, it’s healthy because people have to talk about the issue instead of pretending it doesn’t exist.”

“It [Amaechi's disclosure] is another step forward,” agreed Weaver, relaxing on a pool chair before his first freestyle race. “But I think gay athletes have to try harder [than straight athletes] to prove themselves.”

Swim coach Priscilla Kawakami, the club’s self-described “straight grandma,” says QUAC allows gays and lesbians the opportunity to learn to swim in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere. For some members, traumatized by high school locker-room experiences, it’s their first time participating in a team sport.

QUAC member Dan Bates, a nursing student from Alpine, says he appreciates the aquatic club’s nonjudgmental vibe. It’s a departure from the softball team he plays on in the summer, which has mostly straight players.

“As soon as they find out that I’m gay, they say, ‘Wow, I didn’t know gay people did this,’ ” he said.

More than three-quarters of QUAC’s members are men. Swimmers don’t have to be gay to join; Fadel believes about 10 percent of members are straight, but that’s an estimate.

“We don’t ask,” he said.

A sense of humor helps, though. The club’s Web address is www.quacquac.org – “quack, quack,” get it? – and its symbol is a duck. In fact, a playful wit seems to be a requirement for many gay aquatic clubs: One Colorado team is known as Swimming Queers United in Denver, or SQUID.

Saturday’s meet featured an “undress relay race,” in which each successive swimmer wore fewer clothes than his or her predecessor (while keeping swimsuits on, of course).

“We’re setting up a safe environment for people to come and be whoever they are,” said Fadel, toweling off between races. “QUAC gives people who never saw themselves as athletes a chance to be involved – and to be good. A lot of people are surprised at how good they become.”
