FAQ

Q:
How do I join?
A:
When you wish to swim with us, simply bring a swimming suit and goggles and show up to practice. Introduce yourself to the coach on deck--there are several coaches who take turns. There are usually two coaches at each practice.
Q:
I can't even dog paddle. Can I still join?
A:
Swimmers of all ability levels are welcome. If you want to learn to swim, we will be glad to teach you.
Q:
Do I have to wear a speedo?
A:
No. Wear whatever you are comfortable wearing. Speedos produce less drag in the water than, say, board shorts. Beginning swimmers probably won't notice a big difference. The better you get the more difference you will be able to feel.
Q:
I don't have a speedo/My speedo is on its last legs where is a good place to buy a new one?
A:
There are two swim shops that offer discounts to Masters swimmers.

Pool and Patio
2171 E. 3300 S.
485-5550

Poco Loco Swim Shop
4700 S. 900 E.
263-9178

Gart's Sports usually has a few speedos, though the selection tends to be small, especially off season.
Q:
How much does it cost?
A:
Pool Pass: A day pass at Fremont Pool is $4.50. You can buy monthly or annual passes to any of the Salt Lake Parks and Recreation facilities. Here is a link to a page for the Dimple Dell rec center in Sandy and their rates. Rates may vary slightly from center to center, but not much. The Basic Pass is for a single facility. The Gold Pass gives you access to all county rec centers.

Masters Dues: If you wish to compete at any swim meets you will have to be registered with United States Masters Swimming. The cost is $35/year. We have a party each year to help any one who is interested get registered with USMS. You can also download a registration form from the Utah Masters web site.

QUAC Dues: QUAC dues are $20/year and completely voluntary.
Q:
How often do you attend meets?
A:
We attend local meets (about 1 per month). We also attend the International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics (IGLA) World Championships each year.
Q:
What if I'm just looking for a social/fitness outlet and not interested in competitions?
A:
You do not have to compete if you do not want to. However, you should know that QUAC and IGLA in general are not as competative as high school and college athletics can be. The emphasis is on participating and improving your own times. The participants vary from former collegiate swimmers to those just learning how to swim. Each year there is usually at least one swimmer who attends the IGLA championship who has never been in a swimming meet prior to the competition. They all had a great time.
Q:
Do I need medical clearance to swim with QUAC?
A:
Medical clearance is not required to swim with QUAC. However, we strongly suggest you speak with a doctor if you have any medical condition which could jeapardize your safety while in the wather. You can get more information by reading our safety guidelines.
Q:
I still have questions. Who can talk to?
A:
Email addresses can be found on the about page.
